Independent assessment report-scope to do much better next time

by Peter Timmins

The independent Progress Report on development and implementation of Australia’s first OGP national action plan is published today and available for public comment for two weeks.
PMC highlights this conclusion:

‘The Australian government made substantial progress in completing several commitments in areas such as combatting corporate crime and steps to improve the discoverability of government data. To increase the ambition of commitments, future action plan development could involve a wider range of interests, and include further steps to enhance awareness and support of open government initiatives within government and in the community generally.’

However the report  (109 pages)  identifies poor process including limited public awareness, failure to engage all branches of government and state and local government, low level of ambition (none of the 15 commitments are classified as ‘Well Designed’) and shortcomings in implementation.

These points and Recommendations (Page 5) are relevant to tomorrow’s meeting of the Open Government Forum.
